Wandering scenes
By Fu Xiaodong
Yuan Yuan?s landscapes are wandering scenes with group of people, car concealed under branches, unexpected light, delicate bridge, small piece of great lake stone, or corner sign. It consists in a nature transcending nature, a dense and limited delight, a complicated world imitation, existing for photographic purposes. In the game of ?the Blind Men and the Elephant?, playboy bunny, nurse, death, etc. surround a blue elephant toy, as a metaphor of the society, a game between illusion and fantasy. Artifices dissemble the depths of reality, which lost its original nature. This model scene is not destined to cover social reality itself but to imitate it and create an ideal of it, growing in a miniature landscape of a garden. The city resembles an imitation of a virtual landscape. This is a perpetual in-and-out cycle of reciprocal reversion, sheltering, reproduction between fiction and reality, as a paper stuck on the glass door of a bookshelf, a panoramic photograph in flames, a sketch of a gymnastic exercises? poster, all visual aspects are outlined, reaching the soul, the image attracts people into a certain superficial on-site vision. These common culture scenes, these popular, technical, entertaining methods and this persistent visual attraction attempt to open a fictitious corner of the society. Simultaneously, a special scraping and erasing method resulting into implicit moving brushstrokes, and reminding us of some secret mathematical layouts, lead to a surprising, unfocused and uncertain demolition.
